In the summer of 2010/2011 many devastating weather events occurred in Queensland. None so more than Cyclone Yasi, a category 5 cyclone which crossed the north Queensland coast in the early hours of February 3.
Not many of us would have had any idea of the destructive power over such a wide area of northern Queensland that this cyclone might have caused.
Ergon Energy in conjunction with numerous other authorities began the greatest electricity supply rebuild in Australian history from home reconnections to complete supply rebuilds, the response effort had a variety of logistical and personal issues.
In this presentation, we will examine the issues that were presented and how the management of the restoration was implemented. Issues of supply, personnel, communications and transport of vital supplies will be presented to illustrate the effort and required coordination to reconnect over 220,000 homes and business, a timely reminder as this summer’s storm season fast approaches.
